At Ventura Harbor

A local group, Plein Air Ventura County, is having weekly meet-ups at the Buenaventura Art Association’s gallery during the month of August. Located in the local marina on the second floor, with galleries all around, there are views of the boats and the ocean and buildings. It’s a rather nice place to be and I have spent a lot of time there when I lived a few miles away. A friend and I packed up our supplies and trekked across the county. Traffic was a bit awful as everyone was leaving Los Angeles, but we drove on and arrived to a beautiful day at the beach.

This was my first sketch and it took the longest. Normally with ink pen I like to just get to work without an underlying pencil drawing. Here, I decided to just go ahead and do a pencil sketch as I am no expert at boats or proportions. I am glad I did as I spent a lot of time erasing before I was happy with the results to begin the inking. I spent about 90 minutes on this.

Next came this little weird succulent. It was on the gallery overlooking the marina, so I sat down and sketched it directly in ink. Plants don’t open you up to complaints about proportion (too often, anyway!), so off I went. I also wanted to see how the paper in this sketchbook would hold up to watercolor and I didn’t want to risk my boat to a poor water-paper combination. Luckily, it worked out quite well. I spent about 45 minutes on this drawing because I had to think about my colors and how thin I wanted the washes to be. In truth, this succulent was basically a silvery grey with a touch of subtle rust and green, but I needed to brighten it up.

This was my final drawing, done in about 15 minutes. It was getting into the third hour and I was getting pretty tired. So was my friend. Here, I focused on the cypress trees and a single palm, the dunes beyond the road, and the Pacific beyond the dunes. The little sail boat really was there – it was the boat or flying pelicans, and the boat was the easier choice!

It was a cool, breezy, bright day at the beach. Salty wind. I got sunburned, something I didn’t think about as I don’t hang out in the sun like I used to! It was worth it, though, as I had a good time and came home pleased with my forays, especially into the boat drawing. The succulent was easy and fun – nothing I took too seriously. On the other hand, the cypress trees always throw me a bit because of the way the foliage seems to lie flat across a tree with a few branches – simply put, a complicated flat texture is the only way to describe it.

In between each sketch, a bit of wandering around and socializing before getting back into the sketching.

A Palm Tree, ii

After my satisfaction with yesterday’s watercolor and my ongoing interest in palm trees, I thought about a couple of things. First, I need to get over my fear of buildings. Second, I need to paint more palm trees! So, I decided to use a photo I took awhile ago and posted here to use as subject matter. Below is the original photo which was taken at the Santa Barbara Zoo, near the condors (I think). The zoo itself is a wonderful resource and is always undergoing change and development. I’ve been going there for decades and always like it as it is large enough for a good visit and small enough so you don’t have to move in for a few days!

A Palm Tree

The photo itself is nothing especially exciting but it does give a good display of palm fronds. I am not sure what species this palm is, but it so classical! As well, there are some dracena palms on the right by the lights, which are very different in growth pattern that the one front and center.

Part of me wanted to make the painting simpler, but I also wanted to suggest a bright, sparkly day. The photograph was of a rather hazy day so I had to use a bit of imagination to get the fronds to catch the glittery appearance such palm fronds can have, especially in intense light with a bit of a breeze.

Overall, I like the way this painting turned out. I had to do a bit of glazing to tone things down here and there. Splattering helped for texture. White gouache to do a bit of glare here and there. Yesterday’s painting of an adobe reminded me how easy buildings can be, and today, though simple areas exist in the form of walls, the roof was a bit mossy from the damp of being a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean.

As a quick after thought, I think that the palm tree – the dracena – emerging from the right side of the building is perhaps unnecessary. Into Photoshop and tree removal very poorly done with generative fill – just because I can and could.

A Bit of Paradise

I’ve lived on both coasts of the US as well as been to a few other places. The color of water never ceases to interest me -blue, turquoise, grey, green, fluorescent!

Along with the waters, the intensity of colors is also dependent on where you are and the weather. Here in California, as in other dry climes, when the sun is out and the moisture in the air is very low, the light has its own intensity. This light changes with the seasons and the tilt of the earth. Landscapes without water problems are more abundantly green and often may seem softer simply as the water in the air creates an invisible filter.

Like many people who have enjoyed harsh winters, tropical scenes with palm trees seem like paradise! And I will leave that thought – paradise – up to your imagination!

A Sunday Painter

These past two weeks have been rather a waste – bumps in the normal routines create havoc and everything just seems to fall apart. When that happens, it really does require a focused effort to get back up and into whatever interests me. I am just coming out of a cold – thankfully, not a sinus infection – that has made me not really tired, but just lethargic and lazy between bits of fever and congestion. Lounging around and doing very little and sleeping a lot has been my agenda, filled in with little fun things like dishes . . . .

Actually, yesterday was possibly the real turning point. I was feeling better, so I did some sewing in the morning. I am hand-sewing a top without a machine (including finishing the seams with a whip stitch), just to do it. Then blob time. Miss Marple entertained me for an hour or two between naps. And then it hit me – I was just unhappy because I wasn’t doing what I like to do best – paint or draw! I didn’t want challenges or messes (ie oils) to clean up, but …. what?

Gouache!

I haven’t used gouache for some time. I keep it in the fridge between uses. So, while it was coming to room temperature and soaking up the water I put on it, I taped up a piece of 9×12 CP 140# Arches into two somewhat equal sections. Hot press paper is my preferred paper for gouache as it is smoother and lets the paint move over the paper more easily than cold press.

If you have been following my blog, you know that of late I am rather focused on lavender fields. This first painting was no exception. I wanted to see what I could produce, sort of from a photo, sort of off the top of my head. I wanted a gloomy-looking sky to match the grey, rainy sky of my own world this Sunday, and so moved along. Landscapes are very forgiving (I think) and are a good way to warm up when re-acquainting myself with a medium. So, a lavender field, somewhere in the world.

Then, more of a challenge: Buildings, water, plants, and a boat on a river.

Somewhere in a mythical village along the Nile in Egypt. The traditional sailboats – the felucca – are just so beautiful to see because of their simplicity in shape and line. I sourced a number of photos to create this one. I drew in some basic lines, but that was it. I started with the buildings and then the sky, painting the palms and plants before beginning the river its banks. I left the entire area of the felucca as blank paper, waiting until the end to fill it in. The sail was fairly easy, but the shape of the boat and the suggestion of a person was the most challenging. In the end, I was really pleased with how I met this challenge I presented myself!

Paintings are about 4.5 x 10 each – maybe more or less, I am not going to measure! – using gouache on Arches CP 140# watercolor paper.

Abandoned

Yesterday’s splish-splash was fun, and it seems that I need to take time to paint in watercolor and acrylic as I work toward mastery of oils (on some level!).

I love watercolors, and some days I find I have no patience and just do not want to be too serious. This is when play and messing around are best. Because of yesterday’s madcap painting, today I felt calm and inclined to taking time to pay attention to detail and think. Watercolor really does require thinking as you cannot correct a lot of mistakes.

When I draw with ink and then add color, I never use a pencil to create the rough outlines. Ink and I just get along really well, and usually proportions and details are sufficient to get me started. After painting, I go back and add more ink in areas I think need it, but as today was a minimal ink day I used the watercolors to create more details and information. It is also interesting to note the amount of time a painting takes – sometimes hours, sometimes minutes. I spent about 90 or so minutes here, and am pleased with the results over all.
