Self Portrait in a Sea of Flowers
Matilija Poppies
Matilija (pronounced muh-till-i-hah) poppies are amazing flowers. Â They bloom all at once, have flowers about 5″ in diameter, and can stand over 6 feet tall. Â Impressive when you have vast swaths of them. Â This year’s crop is magnificent!.
Last Year, This Year
Yucca plants bloom in the spring, and then die back. Â The stalks remain behind and new growth sprouts nearby. Â The leaves at the base of the stalk are sharp and spiky. Â They are a protected plant in California. Â Every year, I love seeing the hillsides dotted with their tall flower stalks – often they are 7 – 10 feet tall. Â In a land of low scrub, it is a pleasant break to the eye.
