Against the Sky

Today we went out to the California Poppy Reserve near Lancaster, California. In Los Angeles County, this is in the middle of nowhere, and here is where you see the beauty that was California before Los Angeles and urban sprawl took over. The rains of the past winter have produced an abundance of flowers – more than in many years. Here is the first of a series I took today.

It’s funny how weather can change from one place to another. We drove 70 miles, through canyons and back roads to get here. From our 71 F city we came into a cold (50 F) and very, very windy environment (30-50 mph winds). All I had for cold weather was a vest and a short-sleeved T-shirt. Brrrr!

Nothing like watching old westerns to inspire a title . . . this was taken with wonderful Olympus XA4 and Agfa Vista 200 film, scanned with my little own hands on my Pakon 135.

Sunday morning we had weather! Like clouds in a normally cloudless sky. Rain. Chilly weather at 72F. And it was heaven.

So, loaded with film and with digital, I walked along the creek, about 50 feet above it on the Moonrise trail. For me, this is a bit of a sketchy trail because it’s a bit treacherous here and there, so always best with a friend. I shot a lot of panos that morning, and took a roll of film, too, with my Canonet QL17. Here is one of the panos of that exquisite morning sky. Click on it a couple of times to see it larger.

Dawn

I finally managed to get my butt out of bed early enough to watch the sunrise and take a few pictures. Rather than taking a digital and film camera, I took just a film camera, and my phone. I’m always amazed at the quality of pictures one can get with the phone, especially if no magnification factor is involved.
