Garden of Delights

I have been out of touch with a lot of my “real” and “normal” life because I have had cataract surgery in both eyes these past several weeks. It rather limited anything visual, but now I can see and do things without my glasses even though parts of the world are blurry. My eyes are certainly sharper than they have been in ages, colors are brighter, and in a few weeks I can get checked for new specs. Meanwhile, I have done some painting, and now, some post processing of images I took awhile ago. This is from a restaurant we ate at several weeks ago whilst up in the Morro Bay area of California. I would love to have this as my own garden!

I plan to find some photos I took in the last 6 months and re-edit them with my “new” eyes. It will be interesting to see if my editing has changed at all as far as vividness of color. This photo was vivid in and of itself and unedited prior to surgery, so no idea what is going to happen!

In the Garden

This is the view out my window these days – orange, smokey skies. Despite that, there is beauty to be found in my flower bed and fig tree and potted plants.

I ordered some herb seeds a couple of months ago and planted them in coconut fiber pony packs. I used three of them, and put them in alphabetical order to spell H O T! Hyssop, oregano (Greek), and tarragon (Mexican). They were all nicely lined up, but then I moved them when I wanted to use the table and now have no idea what is where! But, time to transplant into larger pots.

The Brown Turkey fig tree is in full swing! There are plenty to go around. The local varmints like them, too, but I have a great homemade repellent made of dried chilis, garlic, and mint. I spray the tree every night after sundown (to keep the leaves from burning) and have managed to keep most of my fruit.

Of course, the roses have been happy with the heat, and the fact that I actually water them. A flower mix strewn in May is producing all sorts of flowers (and some weeds). The lemon verbena is in full bloom as well.

I also had a couple of cucumber vines. Originally I thought I had planted lemon cukes, but it turns out they were pickling cukes. They have now gone to cucumber heaven (though I have another one blooming), and the leaves are all that remain.

The Palo Verde Tree

The local botanical garden is open at last!  It has been closed since Ventura County closed trails, stores, and such, as well as issued a shelter-in-place order to keep the spread of the coronavirus at a minimum.  Some places are beginning to open up, though the shelter-in-place order is on until the end of May.

It was such a treat – a real slice of heaven – to be able to walk around the garden again.  Many of the spring flowers have gone, like the poppies, but many of the flowering trees are in bloom.  The palo verde tree at the top of the hill has leafed out in all its delicate bright yellow-green glory.  It is so graceful and lovely in spring that it could not be overlooked – here it is for today’s painting.

Tra-La-La Along the Garden Path

Another view of the local botanical gardens.  Today’s image is much sharper than yesterday’s – less muddy from a bit of blur.  Again, Weltur, Ilford, and Xenar.

It seems the Xenar is quite good at handling contrast.  The LR historgram shows both in its display.  As well, the Epson V600 handles C-41 processed B&W film with Digital Ice – very little clean up done in post.  With one roll of the XP Super film left, I am tempted to get some more . . .
