Wine Country, Paso Robles

Wine Country, Paso Robes

This is from a summer or two ago. We drove along Hwy 49 in the central coastal area of California. It is a lovely drive – quite unpopulated in many ways. The hills and valleys spread out on either side of the road, with trees dotting the grassy slopes. Grapes are grown here, and the Paso Robles area is known for its wines. If you take some of the side roads off the highway, which is a nicely paved two-lane roadway, you can find yourself under the canopy of old oak trees, deep in the gloom of shade on a bright summer’s day.

Grain Elevator

Grain Elevator Along the Columbia

As we wend our way to Wisconsin by car, we are seeing a lot of the West – the non-burning part so far – and this is a grain elevator (I think) taken as we drove by it. To one side we had barren hills, an occasional tree, the freeway in front of us, and to the other side, the broad expanses of the Columbia River in Oregon. A building was rare in this barren, beautiful land.

Shadow

Shadow

I really do like trees! I admit to a leaning toward deciduous hardwoods, but when I saw this shadow projected onto the building, I realized that one of the things I enjoy about palm trees is just their crazy (to me) appearance. This shadow looks like me on a bad hair day, but for the palm, it is nice and tidy.
