A View to the East

The View to the East ii

Sunday morning we went out for a hike in the local open space.  The coastal ranges are beautiful right now because of the rains, so long missing from our climate, and returning because of El Nino.  Yesterday’s photo was facing west; this is what lay behind me.  A green and misty land, with a deep gorge to the right, a ridge to the left which, should I climb it, will bring me down into another valley.  Spring!

BTW, this is another panorama, taken with 17 images and merged in LR 6.5.  Gotta love the digital darkroom!

A Morning in the Hills

A Morning in the Hills

The rains have arrived in California, easing a four-year drought.  Brown has turned to green and the miracle of life returns.  I took this yesterday morning around 7 a.m., heading west with the sun behind me.  This is a pano of two images, using the Nikon V1 and 32mm lens.

For some reason the photomerge element of LR and CS6 has crashed.  For free, for laughs, for grins, I tried MS Composite Editor.  I am so pleased – it works beautifully.  After the photomerge, returned it to LR and On1 to doctor it up.  Here are the results for your viewing pleasure.

Details of the pano:  75 or so images reduced to 1500 along the long edge.  Final crop in a 16×9 format.  I pushed the structure of the image, partly because I took this as the sun was disappearing behind the mountains and the light was fading, but also because I think the details are so important in a landscape.  The new leaves and flowers, all green, merge, but they all have different textures, and therein (for me) lies the beauty.

Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home

If you look, you can find old photos taken on huge, bellows cameras of these cliff dwellings as they were discovered.  Many were in terrible shape, and today, through skilled restoration, are in better condition than they were 100 years ago (or more).  In keeping with the old photos, I put together this panorama of Square Tower House.  What I like is that you can see just how nicely it is tucked in under the cliff, and beneath the mesa above.  I think this would be a great place to live – give me that top room! – but the commute might be a bit much for this old lady.
