Out with the Old!

Happy New Year!

Another year, one which we all hope will be more positive on the news front, the employment front, economic front, and whatever front needs improving.

And, of course, with the change of the year, come reflection and resolution.  And gratitude.

In the upcoming year, there are things which both need to be done, and want to be done.  On the “need” list is to get certain things under control, and under the “want” list are things I want to do!  Well, the “need” list can stay in the background, but the “want” list is more fun.  So, what do I want?

  • more outdoor activities
  • more peaceful times
  • more visits with friends and family
  • more creative time set aside for painting, photography, writing, knitting, designing
  • more creative cooking

Outdoors . . .

What can I do here?  I can take a walk at lunch or after work.  I can go to the park or find a trail.  I can make an effort to keep on the move – at least for part of the evening.  And on weekends.  I can get the other half involved as well (ha!) – if I’m lucky!

Peace . . .

Quiet time, time to meditate, time to focus on slowing down, no matter what the craziness of the day.

Family & Friends . . .

So easy to take for granted . . . and resent, too, for obligations that some put upon us.  Not quite sure what I want to do here, but I think some things can be improved.  Maybe an attitude change?

Creativity . . .

All too often, I get so worn out with work that I forget the need to be creative.  It is too easy to stare at the internet or plop down in front of the TV.  I need to set aside time to do the things I really love – and often ignore because I am too tired.  I wonder, though, if I just do and not think about how tired I am – mentally, physically, spiritually – if there will be a healing quality in the activity.

Cooking . . .

Creative cooking to make more healthful meals -more vegetables and fruit and less fat.  Simple cooking to make it do-able.

Whatever . . .

Talk is cheap.  Let’s see what happens.

Tommy’s New Year’s Hat

We last saw our friends Jerry and Raka over a year ago when they came in from Japan for a post-wedding reception in the U.S.  Raka was about five months pregnant at the time, and in December 2009, their son, Tommy, was born.  For the Christmas season, they all flew in to spend the end of the year with family and friends, many of whom only got to meet Tommy for the first time.  Within a few days of arriving here stateside, Tommy got the chicken pox – kids don’t get that vaccination until they are a year old.  When we saw them, Tommy was pretty much recovered, but still all spotty.  Poor kid!

In Japan, red and white are colors of good fortune for the New Year.  And, I happened to have some red and white Wool Ease in my stash, so it seemed to be a perfect color combination, not only for welcoming 2011, but also for the Christmas season as well.  So this pattern is dedicated not just to the now-recovering Tommy, but to our friends Jerry and Raka, and to a happy, prosperous 2011 to family and friends, one and all.

Let Me Sing the New Year Blues

The new year is always a turning point of some kind for me.  Usually I greet it with excitement and enthusiasm, but for this year that seems to have waned.  I’m not quite sure why.  I’ve had the usual stressors that everyone has had in this economy – worries about my job, about money, about a lot of things.  The thing is, these are now part of the daily furniture of life, and after awhile, quite tedious.  So are the usual new year resolutions.

In other words, I’ve become quite bored with myself and my life.  I have been focusing on that and feeling sorry for myself, and totally self-absorbed with it all.  Quite the pity party!

Yesterday Josh and I took a brief walk through an oak woodland nearby.  I love oak trees.  When I was a kid in Illinois, we had a wood lot filled with them and other trees – maple, willow, walnut, crab apple, choke cherry.  The oaks, though, were my favorites.   Here in California, they are too.  They are grand, magnificent, twisty, turny, gnarly, rough, strange, mysterious.

Being outdoors gets me out of myself.  The world is renewed, and so am I.

I think that will be my focus of this next year – to enjoy the world beyond the borders of my norm.
