Where I live, it is law to have about 30% of all land to be dedicated to open space and parks. Â It keeps congestion at bay, though it does raise the cost of housing to obscene levels.
This was taken during an early morning hike, and looking back on the trail, I saw this. Â It rather epitomizes what California once looked like, not all urban sprawl and gnarled freeways.
From the perspective of this image, it is not really possible to see what this tree looks like. Â Eucalyptus trees tend to grow straight up . . . somehow, sometime, this one toppled over and continued to grow. Â “E+J” were here, rather than Kilroy. Â BTW, this is a pano of about 8 images.
Panoramas are rather a bit of fun to make – I didn’t expect this curve at all, and really think it is rather cool!

In many areas of California ranch land, eucalyptus trees were planted as windbreaks between fields or orchards. Nowadays, many are bulldozed because of the brittleness of the trees, dropping large branches from several feet up. Somewhere I read they are called “widow makers” in Australia because of this – easy to kill someone standing below. While I was looking, I didn’t spot any koalas.
