The Domino Effect

We all know what happens when you plan for something – lots of other somethings push their way to the front of the line! It can be good, it can be annoying, it can be a great motivator.

I am finally, finally, finally getting a dedicated sewing area. Not in the studio but along one wall in our overly large bedroom. At last, I will get a grown-up sewing cabinet with drawers and shelves, that closes up to look like a nice piece of furniture while hiding all the stuff that goes along with sewing.

I have a small cabinet,  but I have to move it around and such – it’s not something that I really enjoy using, but it has served its purpose very well. I’ll be giving it away in the next few weeks.  We moved it into the bedroom to see how sewing in there worked out.  Success!   Good light, minimal clutter, and both of us are much happier.

Or, I’ll be putting it in my garage until I find a new home for it!

And, there is, at last, space emerging in the garage. I have been cleaning things up, traipsing to the local Goodwill donation center, throwing things out, and mucking through my years and years of accumulation.

To create more space, I have found a mobile shredding service that will come when I call – probably in about 3 weeks once I go through more boxes and some filing cabinets. Legal and financial papers are not to be thrown into the regular rubbish – too much personal information.

Additionally. a local book store which has boughten books from our extensive library will be here Easter Monday to buy more.  I will be sending all my weaving books to a friend in Oregon.

Time to move on and simplify and free myself of the burden of excessive possessions.

Oh, those of you who know me will probably be laughing at me, and even if you don’t, you are most likely chuckling at the idea of buying a sewing cabinet and clearing out stuff to make way for another stuff. Well, isn’t that what we all do?

Domino effect, indeed. But, in the end, I will have a lot less stuff than before. And since I am ancient, I rather like the idea of having less these days than too much.  What a burden to take into the afterlife!

  1. I’ve got a growing stack of books in a corner in the dining room ready to donate to the library for its used book sale — as soon as the library starts taking books again! Drat this stupid virus, anyhow.

  2. Yes, we have oodles and oodles. It’s time to give some to a new home. The bookstore we are selling to gives a good home, is a wonderful store, and is rather sentimental to us – we got involved at it! And now, 30 years later, here we are.

Subject matter is fiction, history, art, crafts, photography, sewing, spinning, weaving, gardening, biography. Some hobbies are no more, and it’s time to let those books find new homes. I like the idea of selling them to a bookstore rather than dumping them off at a thrift store.

  3. Good point, Laura Kate. I also think of it as less stuff I am never going to use. I wouldn’t have so much if I didn’t like it!! Oh, I like this – buy it. And this, buy it. And this, save it. Hard to let go, but good, too.

  4. I agree with you, Aly. Goodwill does run a book website, but . . . I hope to get rid of a couple of hundred books. I won’t make much on it, but it will help pay for boxes of paper needing shredding! My father told me to never throw out legal documents (long before the web, etc.). The first time I shredded stuff was in 2007 or so – with things from – really – 1971 included in the mix. Now, from about 2007 to now – only 13 years instead of nearly 40! But, I really am not a hoarder though it sounds as though I am! More of a clutterbug that straightens things up – and puts them in the garage. 😉

  5. Congratulations on getting a dedicated sewing space and for simplifying your life. There are so many things we don’t need. I periodically go through cabinets and closets. It feels great when things are cleared out.

  6. It helps to clear the headspace, and set priorities, for a new endeavor. Congrats! You’re almost there. But really, ancient? Hardly.

  7. I haven’t tackled my clothes yet, Fraggy, but I honestly don’t have a lot. Always good to have room for whatever your heart desires! (Like those cool boots . . . )

  8. Older than I seem, AV. It does clear head space, too, to clear out. I find I am muddled in a muddled environment . . .

  9. Anne, I agree. It’s also appalling how much stuff is made, and later discarded. Not that we should wear rags, but things have changed for sure since we were kids.
